eDisclaimers

Email disclaimers are statements you often find appended to the end of an email. They sometimes have legal character, sometimes they are meant for marketing. What they have in common is that my blood starts boiling at their sight. Well, I started collecting them at some point.

While these statements have a sane purpose, namely to avoid liability for the content of the emails which you cannot control, it is interesting that so many of them are... well... misguided. The best examples are stating two things. For one, you are bound to certain terms just by having your mail server receive the message. Second, you have violated those terms by having read the message and the disclaimer. Such disclaimers are bad.

Often a disclaimer succeeds in its sane purpose. It doesn't offend, it doesn't threaten, it doesn't sound thorougly misplaced, It is just one of possible protections should someone try to make the sender responsible for the content of the message, and that's what it actually is for. Such disclaimers are not bad.

The following is my collection of email disclaimers. Some are quite good, some are acceptable and there are a few with a totally insane content. That I leave to you to judge for yourself.

Note that the originating company or organisation is not always responsible for the content of the disclaimer. Some companies enforce disclaimers, employees who send email over their wires cannot do anything to remove them. But other companies don't enforce them, it is the individual employee who willingly appends them to all her mail. More, the true origin cannot always be determined. If you see a disclaimer here stating it comes from your company, and you know your company does not have such, please inform me.

Whereever you see a term named [cesored], it means that the bollocks really had the nerve to put someone's name, telephone number or email address into the disclaimer. I removed these, of course, because I cannot deliberately display other people's private data.

If you find any grammatical, contextual or other errors, be sure that they are not mine. The disclaimers are represented verbatim, as they came to my inbox.
